Money and God
Money is something we need. Without it we can’t survive. We need money in order to live. To have a place of shelter, clothes, and food we need money. However, how much value should we place on money? What does God think of money?
According to God’s Word, God does not want us to love money more than him (Matthew 6:24). We can’t serve God and money. We have to make a choice - either God is first or something else.
Secondly, God wants us to understand that money does not give us purpose in life, God does (Philippians 4:11-13). Money will never give us permanent satisfaction in life.
Thirdly, loving money can cause problems (1 Timothy 6:6-12). It’s the reason why we might have conflict with others, anger, depression, worry, addictions like gambling.
So with that being said, what should we do with money? According to God’s Word, God is calling us to share our money and give it away (Matthew 6: 33 and 1 Timothy 6: 17-19). I know it sounds crazy, but that is what God wants us to do. The main reason for us to give is to become more like God.
We give to God because we are responding to God’s grace (2 Corinthians 8:1- 5). God gave Jesus to us, He wants us to be a giver too and that includes giving money.
Secondly, we give generously towards God’s purpose (2 Corinthians 8: 4). When you spend your money, what does your money go towards? To benefit you or others? Think of your money as an investment. Are you investing in what is eternal?
Thirdly, giving to God is an act of worship (1 Corinthians 16:2). Finally, giving to God teaches us to put God first (Proverbs 3: 9-10 and Deuteronomy 14:23)
What happens when we give? We are blessed (Malachi 3:10), we are rewarded (Matthew 6:3), and we will reap what we sow (2 Corinthians 9:6).
When I was 19 years old I decided I would start to tithe (give 10 percent of what I earned to God). The offering plate came by and I put $50 dollars in the plate. That same week, I got a $3000.00 scholarship for school. I couldn’t believe that God took my $50 and made it $3000. That’s what happens when we give to God, supernatural things happen.
